Fast food has been a cornerstone of stonerdom since time out of mind. The drive-thru at a Del Taco is, for many potheads, an experience remembered as fondly as it is vaguely.

But have you ever wondered which fast food joints cannabis users like best? Neither have we, but for some reason some researchers have spent a lot of time and energy tracking the eating habits of stoners and we’re curious enough to check out their findings.

The Green Market Report and Consumer Research Around Cannabis teamed up recently on a study which polled consumers who had purchased cannabis from legal dispensaries in Denver, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Portland, and Washington DC. They asked which fast food restaurants these cannabis users had visited in the last four weeks, then compared that to answers from the non-cannabis using population.

What they found was that more marijuana users went to McDonald’s than any other fast food establishment (43%). The close runners up were Taco Bell (18.3%), Wendy’s (17.08%), Burger King (17.6%), and Subway (8.7%). Dragging behind were, in placing order, Arby’s, Chick-Fil-A, Jack-In-The-Box and Carl’s Jr.

When looking for the reasoning as to why loving it beats out thinking outside the bun or having it your way, researchers jumped on the obvious conclusion that more stoners go to McDonald’s because there are a hell of a lot more McDonald’s. “McDonald’s wins by virtue of the sheer number of locations – by default really,” said Jeff Stein, Vice President of Consumer Research Around Cannabis.

Which Fast Food Joints Are Most Cannabis Specific?

Also worth noting that most of these numbers are pretty in keeping with national averages, but with a little extra stoner kick. (For example, stoners frequent McDonald’s about 10 percent more often than non-users). The exception to that rule is Taco Bell.

Stoners go to Taco Bell 43 percent more often than squares. That means that, though more weed fans go to McDonald’s than any other fast food joint, that’s not what you might call a pothead-specific behavior. Taco Bell is, on the other hand, a more cannabis-specific behavior, since you’re significantly more likely to visit if you partake of the wacky tobaccy.

By the same token, cannabis users are 17 percent more likely to eat at Wendy’s, 19 percent more likely to eat at Burger King, and 10 percent less likely to eat at Subway than their 420-unfriendly counterparts.
