Two men are shot and in critical condition after an attempted robbery at a Los Angeles dispensary Wednesday morning.
Wearing body armour and carrying at least one assault rifle, the two entered HP Med Collective in Walnut Park, an area just south of Huntington Park, according to CBS Los Angeles. There’s no word on why the arsenal carried by the assailants was so extreme. “They were there to kill us,” the owner told KTLA.
The owner says that he saw the robbers entering the store on a security monitor and fired on them, shooting the two men multiple times, according to Lt. Thomas Giandomenico of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
As of early Wednesday morning, authorities weren’t certain whether the attempted robbers had also fired shots during the incident, but no one else was harmed in the altercation. Video taken at the scene shows bloodied clothes and broken glass lying on the ground outside the store.
An investigation is ongoing. The owner, named Ike, has been questioned but not taken into custody. For now authorities are treating the shooting as a case of self-defense, but it could potentially become a homicide investigation, according to Giandomenico.
California has seen dispensary robberies devolve into violence before, including an attempted robbery at an unlicensed collective in San Bernardino last year, which resulted in the death of a security guard.
