When half a ton of weed went missing in Argentina, it was clear that somebody was going to have to pay the piper. And for a second it seemed that piper was going to be of the Pied variety, as authorities tried to blame the disappeared cannabis on mice. But eventually somebody started to figure out that it was a lot more likely that some crooked cops took it than a herd of rodents.

During the inspection of a police warehouse, about a kilo and a half of police-seized cannabis was found missing. According to the Guardian, suspicion “fell on the city’s former police commissioner Javier Specia, who had left the inventory for the impounded marijuana unsigned when he left his post in April 2017.”

But when called for questioning Specia and his men came up with a pretty ineffective, but also funny, lie. Specia and three of his subordinates all told a judge in the case that the five hundred pounds of missing weed was “eaten by mice.”

Forensic experts called into court said that this was pretty unlikely that even a giant mass of mice could eat that much cannabis. “Buenos Aires University experts have explained that mice wouldn’t mistake the drug for food, and that if a large group of mice had eaten it, a lot of corpses would have been found in the warehouse,” said a spokesperson for the judge.

So far eight police officers have been fired in connection with the great mouse caper. Though Specia is gone from the force, he will still face an internal police investigation in the matter.
