A surprising twist just came into the story of cannabis technology. One company claims it has successfully extracted medically beneficial cannabinoids from a plant other than cannabis, and says it plans to put this extracon the market within the month.

Isodiol, a research and product development group that focuses on cannabis, said in a late October press release that it is soon to launch “the market’s first non-cannabis, highly bioactive cannabinoid, CBD, derived from the hops plant.” That’s right. A CBD is about to go on sale that is made from hops, a cousin plant of cannabis and key ingredient in beer.

The company makes their innovation sound very mysterious and impressive, saying it came as a result of “proprietary genetics and extraction technology that allow for the isolation of the cannabinoids and terpenes without denaturing the molecule.”

Sales are said to commence on the product by the end of November. The first hops-born CBD product from the company will be a time-release tablet which “dissolves in the lower intestine,” according to an article on Inverse. Isodiol currently markets other (cannabis derived) CBD products such as tinctures, capsules, and creams.

Cannabinoids until now have not been extracted much from plants other than marijuana (maybe not at all, according to our research). They do, however, exist in several other sources. Flaxseed, black pepper, echinacea, and several other plants produce cannabinoids or other compounds which act on cannabinoid receptors in similar ways.

Chocolate, for example, contains FAAH, an enzyme which breaks down endocannabinoids in our bodies, releasing a natural form of THC, which is why it feels darn good to eat chocolate sometimes.

If Isodiol delivers on its promise to produce medical grade CBD while bypassing the cannabis plant, things could change for patients who use cannabidiol. Even in the 29 states with some form of legalized medical cannabis, MMJ programs are often unwieldy and cumbersome to navigate. Parents whose children need CBD to treat conditions such as serious epilepsy often have to choose between going to black market sources or transplanting their family to a state with legalized cannabis. If they could instead purchase CBD derived from plants which are not controlled substances, that could change their situation dramatically.
