According to Match.com’s recent survey, 54% of people who use emojis had sex in 2014 compared to only 31% of those who don’t. In addition to this, 52% of emoji users went on a first date in 2014 compared to 27% of non-users.
So why are emojis such great wing-men? One theory is that while a lot of us struggle to get our point across clearly through text messaging, emojis do a pretty good job of saying how we feel and what we’d like to do. Both men and women seemed to like emojis, and both men and women who use emojis are having more sex than their emoji-phobe counterparts.
There is another way to express yourself romantically through a text message of course; sexting. 48% of single men and 40% of single women have sent at least one naughty text in the past year and 35% of both genders have sent a nude photo, even if it’s not always desired. The data is pretty clear on this one – According to the survey, men normally like to receive naughty photos and texts, whereas women would generally prefer that men kept their texting clean. Everyone’s different of course, but if you want to send something naughty it’s probably a good idea to make sure that the person on the other end of the line will welcome it.
It’s important to remember that this survey isn’t perfect – it was based on users of Match.com which definitely doesn’t include all the single people in the world, and a lot of questions were geared towards heterosexual people and relationships, which cuts out a significant chunk of the population. The survey still came up with some pretty interesting results though, all-inclusive or not, and makes you think a little more about emoji use.
This is all evidence that the way we date is beginning to change – we are meeting online instead of in a bar, sending a text instead of making a phone call, in some ways we’re reverting back to hieroglyphics, with little pictures in place of words. The end game for most singles out there still seems to remain more or less the same. Although communication is changing a little now, most of us still just want to find someone we can sit on the couch next to while we do nothing, and I personally find that beautiful.
