Marijuana legalization is normally the domain of the Green Leaf party in Israel. This is a single issue effort that hasn’t even got one seat in the government body of the Knesset. However, an Israeli news site has reported that a traditional party has held a meeting at the ZOA, or the Zionist Organisation of America, in an attempt to promote medical marijuana and discuss legalization in general.
Expert speakers present said that there have been over 18,000 criminal cases that revolve around marijuana, yet only 25% of the population supports its criminalisation.
Legalization, however, is limited by the political divide – the Arab parties have now all dropped out of the pact, which may lead to a fragmented vote in the elections this month.
The Jerusalem Post has reported that the Green Leaf campaign will be run by Oren Leibovitz, who created the website cannabis.com.
