During a now infamous interview with syndicated radio show “The Breakfast Club,” Joe Biden talked about why he’s not crazy about legalizing cannabis. Because he said something really stupid shortly after, the presumptive Democratic nominee’s thoughts on cannabis have not been highlighted by the media, but they’re worth looking into.
Biden has said that it “makes no sense for people to go to jail” for marijuana. He supports federal decriminalization of cannabis, but not legalization. While decriminalization would prevent people from going to jail for simple possession, it would still incarcerate people for dealing a tolerated drug.
The host of “The Breakfast Club,” Charlamagne Tha God, questioned Biden about the difference between supporting decriminalization and legalization. Biden then pivoted from cannabis legalization being a criminal justice issue to a health issue.
“Because they’re trying to find out whether or not there is any impact on the use of marijuana, not in leading you to other drugs, but what it affects,” the former Vice President said.
“Does it affect long term development of the brain and we should wait until the studies are done? I think science matters.”
“I think we’ve got decades and decades of studies from actual weed smokers though,” Charlamagne added.
“Yeah, I do. I know a lot of weed smokers,” Biden replied, without exactly addressing the question.
This was all before Biden made a comment that earned him the ire of pretty much everyone. After he said he had to cut the interview short so that his wife could use his home studio, Charlamagne said, “You can’t do that to black media.”
After a diatribe about his record on racial issues, Biden’s parting words were, “You got more questions but I tell ya, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”
The rest, as they say, is history.
