A lot of companies were making loud splashes in the wax pool last weekend at Chalice California, but others prefer to do that Olympic dive that barely makes a ripple. You might not have heard of the New England-based research and development company Royal Extractions, but they came to San Bernadino last weekend, hooked a lot of patients up with murderous flower and concentrate, then ghosted out of there with two trophies:

1st Place Highest Terps – Blueberry Valley

3rd Place Sativa Concentrate – Agent 004 (Cross of two Agent Oranges and Gorilla Glue #4)

Their meds are clean and their business is cautious. But that’s how you play the long game that is surviving whims of the culture and lawmakers. Following their big wins last weekend,  we talked to them about preferred solvents, lab set-ups, and fears about what the regulated future of California cannabis might look like.

What’s your favorite wax that you make or have made?

That’s a difficult one to answer. It really depends on the time and place, but I love any of our fresh resin runs especially the tangie and lemon runs.

What solvents do you use and why?

I use strictly instrument grade n-Butane (pure C4H10) that I personally distill prior to coming in contact with our material. I really think the n-tane is elite for terpene preservation during our extraction process.

What equipment does your lab consist of and how many people operate it?

I primarily run our ExtractionTek solutions light hydrocarbon botanical extractor 1300 accompanied by Cascade botanical ovens and Edwards oil-free pumps all surrounded by explosion-proof ventilation. This workspace is operated solely by one person.

What do you look for in great hash?

Personally I look for flavor over everything, next in play is always cleanliness. A clean extract is necessary if you want to actually call it medicine.

What was the biggest obstacle you’ve ever faced and how did you get past it?

Life’s a rollercoaster. You just have to keep your head up and keep on keeping on.

When did you start to feel like you were really good at this?

I’m still learning everyday and have been for the last 5 years now. One day maybe I’ll feel like it I’ve really got it down.

Where do you think your business will be in 2 years?

Hopefully legalization on the horizon. Royal extractions will be able to expand into a retail market for the patients and eventually a recreational market.

What was it like the first time you dabbed?

It was the moment I knew what I was going to do for the rest of my life.

What do you wake up in the morning thinking about?

I wake up every day thinking about how blessed I am to be alive and well.

Who is your favorite extract competitor?

I’m not sure I see anyone or any other company as a competitor, but rather as a peer sharing the same passion.

What’s the most important question facing the cannabis business right now?

Are big pharma and Wall Street investors going to take over our mom and pop industry?

Where can people find your product?

We are strictly a research and development team and our product won’t be for sale until cannabis is federally legal.
