To President Trump, it must look like the sky is falling. There are a whole lot of impending threats just waiting to drop down on him. There are those ICBM’s getting launched out of North Korea, there’s the fact that it looks like his kid colluded with a foreign power to subvert a democratic presidential election. But what’s weighing on the 45th President of the United State’s mind now is the threat of falling bundles of drugs.
Trump took some time to tell reporters on Air Force one last week that the yet-to-be commissioned or planned wall along the U.S./Mexico border would have to be transparent in order to ensure that Americans weren’t nailed by large packages of narcotics being flung over the wall.
“One of the things with the wall is you need transparency. You have to be able to see through it,” Trump said, as reported by The Washington Post.
“In other words, if you can’t see through that wall – so it could be a steel wall with openings, but you have to have openings because you have to see what’s on the other side of the wall.
“And I’ll give you an example. As horrible as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them — they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall.”
Trump is right. There is actually a history of drug smugglers using catapults to launch product into the country. In fact earlier this year U.S. border guards discovered a device which had actually been attached to the wall and which projected controlled substances over the border.
The only problem is that a wall being transparent would not American’s safety from falling drug loads. “They’re launching drugs not five feet from the wall, or 10 feet from the wall, where a transparent wall would help,” randon Behlendorf, SUNY-Albany homeland security expert, told Wired. “They’re launching it 100 feet over the wall, 150 feet over the wall. No amount of transparency is going to help you in that context.”
But, if things continue on the way they have been, then it’s very likely that the border between the two countries will be transparent. Nothing the Trump administration has done since it came into office has indicated any serious plans for them to actually build that wall, other than talking about it, so it’s not unlikely that the wall will never get built. And non-existent walls are pretty transparent.
