Promoting his new memoir on CBS This Morning, the Redheaded Stranger expounded on one of his most frequently visitied topics of conversation: the virtues of the cannabis plant. Like his lyrics, his thoughts on green stuff were succinct, colloquial and profound.

Asked if marijuana was a gateway to addictive drugs like cocaine or heroin, Shotgun Willie answered, “I would be the first to say that’s wrong. I think it eliminates other addictions for me…”

Earlier in the interview, the singer went into detail of smoking had eased his substance abuse. “I used to drink a lot. I used to smoke a lot of cigarettes. Now I don’t. Substituting pot for cigarettes and alcohol, it was a smart choice.”

The interviewers also asked for clarification on a remark Nelson had made in his book that he expects marijuana to be totally legal in the U.S. within the next five years. Nelson said, “I think the way it’s going, and it may be quicker than that, once all the so called smart people see the money, see the bottom line. Look at Colorado, Washington, oregon.” True that, Country Willie.
